Real Estate Revolution Has Not Happened -- Yet.

What's Exciting Today? ... Clearing my bookshelf recently, I ran across Leading the Revolution, written by Gary Hamel in 2000 at the peak of the Internet Bubble (and published by the Harvard Business School Press).

With chapter titles like "Go Ahead! Revolt!" you're taken back to those crazy times. Wow. How soon we forget. And how's this for hyperbole?

"As much as any company in the world, Enron has institutionalized a capacity for perpetual innovation. No wonder Fortune magazine named Enron America's most innovative company for five years running." Uh-oh.

But Hamel's thesis -- new "business concepts" create competitive advantage -- is still intriguing. He suggests that you try to imagine ten things that customers would never say about your company or our industry. Then develop a business model to make them come true.

As I wrote at the time, we might start in real estate with "Relocating my office is fun" or "My lease is easy to understand" (New Business Concepts Brewing -- Pay Attention, Sep 11, 2000). Now fashion a business plan to deliver these results.

So what do you think people would never say about real estate? What innovations will change our business? What excites you today?
