1. WEB SUCCESS. CNN picks up Starboard Commercial's Virtual Tour of San Francisco. As part of its web site, Starboard had developed a series of pictures of the San Francisco Bay Area to orient perspective tenants to the San Francisco market. The feature was so good that CNN Interactive, one of the web's most popular sites, added the "tour" to its Destinations travel section. Starboard's webmaster reports that traffic to their site skyrocketed by over 1,000 in just three days. 2. NEW AND NOTABLE. The First Union Real Estate Investments REIT, which owns a diversified portfolio of properties, has recently targeted parking as a major focus. Cornerstone Properties is a REIT specializing in high quality office buildings in major U.S. cities. Based in San Jose, the Bay Apartment Communities REIT specializes in high quality apartment communities in Northern California. The AMLI Residential REIT targets luxury residential apartments in the Midwest, Southeast and Southwest. Cushman & Wakefield has launched its new web site, which is an extensive brochure online. Created by Jack Peckham, the Real Estate Cyberspace Society is dedicated to maximizing the value of the Internet for real estate professionals. The CensusCD site markets a CD-ROM, which contains U.S. demographic data from 67 Census Bureau CD's all combined on one diskette. 3. NET VALUE. The Danter Company provides good value at its web site by posting current market research on multifamily and residential trends. Available now, under "Starts Watch," is an analysis of the preliminary 1996 building permits data from the Census Bureau by state, including a series of color maps illustrating which states are experiencing growth and which are decreasing. This is valuable information for multifamily investors. 4. WEB GROWTH. Nielsen reported that "nearly one-quarter of Americans and Canadians over the age of 16, or 50.6 million people, hooked up to the Net at least once during the month of December 1996." San Francisco Chronicle, March 13, 1997. 5. WAVE OF THE FUTURE? Stockbroker Charles Schwab reports that "half of all new accounts are opened by investors using computers linked to the Internet or an on-line service" according to the Wall Street Journal, March 17, 1997. 5.
